Live Scan Fingerprinting: What You Need to Know

Many employers now require a background check before offering a job or as a condition of employment. This is especially common in school districts, churches, youth clubs, daycare centers, foster care, and adoption applications.

The Live Scan Process

  1. Complete the Required Form – Applicants must fill out the BCIA 8016, Request for Live Scan Service form provided by the requesting agency.
  2. Bring a Valid ID – A government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license, passport, or state ID) is required. Expired IDs are not accepted.
  3. Fingerprinting & Submission – A Certified Fingerprint Roller electronically scans and transmits the applicant’s fingerprints to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and/or the FBI for processing.
  4. Background Check Processing – The fingerprints are matched against existing records.
    • No matches? Clearance is typically received within 48 to 72 hours.
    • Match found? A DOJ or FBI technician reviews the report, which may cause delays.

Additional Important Information

  • Fees & Payment: Costs vary based on DOJ/FBI processing fees and the rolling fee. Some employers cover the cost, while others require applicants to pay.
  • Where Results Are Sent: The requesting agency (not the Live Scan provider) receives results directly. Applicants should follow up with their agency for status updates.
  • Rejections & Resubmissions: If fingerprints are unreadable, applicants may need to resubmit them at no extra charge if done within 30 days.
  • Privacy & Security: Fingerprint data is securely transmitted and not stored by the Live Scan provider.
  • Out-of-State Requirements: California Live Scan only works within the state. Applicants needing fingerprinting for out-of-state purposes may require traditional ink fingerprinting instead
